The Sierra Nevada mountains are a mountain range in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, and are a popular tourist destination, known for their stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and variety of activities.
The range is about 70 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide. It is flanked by the Vega de Granada to the north and the Alpujarras region to the south. It’s a home to a variety of plants and animals, many of which are unique to the region. Some of the notable plants include the Spanish fir tree, the Granada violet, and the Sierra Nevada gentian. Some of the notable animals include the Iberian ibex, the Spanish fir martin, and the golden eagle.
The Sierra Nevada contains the highest point of continental Spain: Mulhacen (3,479 meters above sea level) and as many as 37 other summits over 3-thousand meters high. All of them are accessible to experienced hikers, although several provide significant scrambling sections, and some are located in remote parts of the range, quite difficult to access. Considering that the trails in these mountains are not marked, navigation in these less frequented areas can be tricky.
Determining the list of peaks turned out to be more difficult than I expected, because many sources provide contradictory information about their locations, names, and heights. The most reliable one, that I relied on, was developed by the Andaltura team (andaltura.com), although there are a few small errors, such as overestimating the height of Puntal del Goteron by 170 meters.
It took a few summer and winter hiking seasons, and a lot of “blood, sweat, and… blisters”, but I managed to summit all of them. It was a great challenge and I’m really glad I did it.
